एक शिष्य को उसके गुरु ने उसे नाम का उपदेश दिया । किन्तु गुरु वचन में दृढ़ श्रद्धा नहीं होने से शिष्य के मन में यह शंका बनी ही रही कि इस के जाप से हरि मिलेंगे या नहीं । फिर नाम महिमा न जानने वाले पांच व्यक्तियों से पू़छा तो भी मतभेद ही मिले । फिर किसी संत के पास जा कर पू़छे तब तो वे कहेंगे - हरि नाम से हरि निश्चय मिलेंगे और नाम महिमा भी अपार बतायेंगे । जैसे बहुमुल्य हीरा मूर्ख के हाथ में दिया जाय तो वह हीरा की कीमत एक कौड़ी ही करेगा और अनजान पाँच व्यक्तिओं से पूछे तो भी उसकी कीमत का पता नहीं लगेगा किन्तु जौहरी के पास जाने पर तो उसका मूल्य अपार ही सिद्ध होगा
