श्लोक : 'अश्वत्थामा बलिर्व्यासो हनुमांश्च विभीषणः। कृपः परशुरामश्च सप्तैते चिरंजीविनः॥'
अर्थात् : अश्वत्थामा, बलि, व्यास, हनुमान, विभीषण, कृपाचार्य और भगवान परशुराम ये सभी चिरंजीवी हैं। ये इस कल्प के अंत तक इस पृथ्वी पर विद्यमान रहेंगे।

1. बलि : असुरों के राजा बलि के दान के चर्चे दूर-दूर तक थे। देवताओं पर चढ़ाई करके राजा बलि ने इंद्रलोक पर अधिकार कर लिया था। और वह त्रिलोकाधिपति बन गया था। तीनों लोक पर राज करने वाला बलि असुरों के प्रति उदार और देवताओं के प्रति सख्त था। उसकी मनमानी से देवता तंग आ चुके थे। वह बहुत शक्तिशाली और घमंडी था।
राजा बलि के घमंड को चूर करने के लिए भगवान विष्णु को वामन अवतार लेना पड़ा। भगवान ब्राह्मण का भेष धारण कर राजा बलि के समक्ष पहुंच गए, क्योंकि वह परमदानी था। भगवान ने उसे भिक्षा में तीन पग धरती दान में मांगी ली।
राजा बलि ने हंसते हुए कहा, 'बस तीन पग? जहां आपकी इच्छा हो तीन पैर रख दो।' तब भगवान ने अपना विराट रूप धारण कर दो पग में तीनों लोक नाप दिए और फिर बलि से पूछा अब बताओं तीसरा पग कहां रखूं अब तो तुम्हारे पास कोई जगह नहीं बची। तब बलि ने हाथ जोड़कर कहा प्रभु तीसरा पग मेरे सिर पर रख दो। अब यही बचा है मेरे पास। 
तब भगवान ने उसके वि‍नम्र उत्तर और दानी स्वभाव से प्रसंन्न होकर उसे चिरंजीवी रहने का वरदान दिया और उसके सिर पर सिर पर पैर रखकर उसे पाताल लोक भेज दिया। बलि रसातल के राजा बन गए।

2.परशुराम : परशुराम को कौन नहीं जानता? राम के काल के पूर्व महान ऋषि रहे हुए हैं परशुराम। उनके पिता का नाम जमदग्नि और माता का नाम रेणुका है। पति परायणा माता रेणुका ने पांच पुत्रों को जन्म दिया, जिनके नाम क्रमशः वसुमान, वसुषेण, वसु, विश्वावसु तथा राम रखे गए। राम की तपस्या से प्रसन्न होकर भगवान शिव ने उन्हें फरसा दिया था इसीलिए उनका नाम परशुराम हो गया।
भगवान पराशुराम राम के पूर्व हुए थे, लेकिन वे चिरंजीवी होने के कारण राम के काल में भी थे और कृष्ण के काल में भी थे। भगवान परशुराम विष्णु के छठवें अवतार हैं। इनका प्रादुर्भाव वैशाख मास के शुक्ल पक्ष की तृतीया को हुआ, इसलिए उक्त तिथि अक्षय तृतीया कहलाती है। इनका जन्म समय सतयुग और त्रेता का संधिकाल माना जाता है।
चक्रतीर्थ में किए कठिन तप से प्रसन्न हो भगवान विष्णु ने उन्हें त्रेता में रामावतार होने पर तेजोहरण के उपरान्त कल्पान्त पर्यन्त तक तपस्यारत भूलोक पर रहने का वर दिया। कल्कि अवतार होने पर उनका गुरुपद ग्रहण कर उन्हें शस्त्रविद्या प्रदान करना भी बताया गया है।

3.हनुमान : अंजनी पुत्र हनुमान को भी अजर अमर रहने का वरदान मिला हुआ है। यह राम के काल में राम भगवान के परम भक्त रहे हैं। हजारों वर्षों बाद वे महाभारत काल में भी नजर आते हैं। महाभारत में प्रसंग हैं कि भीम उनकी पूंछ को मार्ग से हटाने के लिए कहते हैं तो हनुमानजी कहते हैं कि तुम ही हटा लो, लेकिन भीम अपनी पूरी ताकत लगाकर भी उनकी पूंछ नहीं हटा पाता है।
वाल्मीकि रामायण के उत्तरकाण्ड के चालीसवें अध्याय में इस बारे में प्रकाश डाला गया है। लंका विजय कर अयोध्या लौटने पर जब श्रीराम उन्हें युद्घ में सहायता देने वाले विभीषण, सुग्रीव, अंगद आदि को कृतज्ञता स्वरूप उपहार देते हैं तो हनुमानजी श्रीराम से याचना करते हैं- यावद् रामकथा वीर चरिष्यति महीतले। तावच्छरीरे वत्स्युन्तु प्राणामम न संशय:।।
अर्थात : 'हे वीर श्रीराम। इस पृथ्वी पर जब तक रामकथा प्रचलित रहे, तब तक निस्संदेह मेरे प्राण इस शरीर में बसे रहे।' इस पर श्रीराम उन्हें आशीर्वाद देते हैं- 'एवमेतत् कपिश्रेष्ठ भविता नात्र संशय:। चरिष्यति कथा यावदेषा लोके च मामिका तावत् ते भविता कीर्ति: शरीरे प्यवस्तथा। लोकाहि यावत्स्थास्यन्ति तावत् स्थास्यन्ति में कथा।'
अर्थात् : 'हे कपिश्रेष्ठ। ऐसा ही होगा। इसमें संदेह नहीं है। संसार में मेरी कथा जब तक प्रचलित रहेगी, तब तक तुम्हारी कीर्ति अमिट रहेगी और तुम्हारे शरीर में प्राण भी रहेंगे ही। जब तक ये लोक बने रहेंगे, तब तक मेरी कथाएं भी स्थिर रहेगी।' 

4.विभिषण : रावण के छोटे भाई विभिषण। जिन्होंने राम की नाम की महिमा जपकर अपने भाई के विरु‍द्ध लड़ाई में उनका साथ दिया और जीवन भर राम नाम जपते रहें। कोटा के कैथून में विभिषण का एकमात्र मंदिर है।

5. ऋषि व्यास : महाभारतकार व्यास ऋषि पराशर एवं सत्यवती के पुत्र थे, ये सांवले रंग के थे तथा यमुना के बीच स्थित एक द्वीप में उत्पन्न हुए थे। अतएव ये सांवले रंग के कारण 'कृष्ण' तथा जन्मस्थान के कारण 'द्वैपायन' कहलाए। इनकी माता ने बाद में शान्तनु से विवाह किया, जिनसे उनके दो पुत्र हुए, जिनमें बड़ा चित्रांगद युद्ध में मारा गया और छोटा विचित्रवीर्य संतानहीन मर गया। 
कृष्ण द्वैपायन ने धार्मिक तथा वैराग्य का जीवन पसंद किया, किन्तु माता के आग्रह पर इन्होंने विचित्रवीर्य की दोनों सन्तानहीन रानियों द्वारा नियोग के नियम से दो पुत्र उत्पन्न किए जो धृतराष्ट्र तथा पाण्डु कहलाए, इनमें तीसरे विदुर भी थे। व्यासस्मृति के नाम से इनके द्वारा प्रणीत एक स्मृतिग्रन्थ भी है। भारतीय वांड्मय एवं हिन्दू-संस्कृति व्यासजी की ऋणी है।

6.अश्वत्थामा : अश्वथामा गुरु द्रोणाचार्य के पुत्र हैं। अश्वस्थामा के माथे पर अमरमणि है और इसीलिए वह अमर हैं, लेकिन अर्जुन ने वह अमरमणि निकाल ली थी। ब्रह्मास्त्र चलाने के कारण कृष्ण ने उन्हें शाप दिया था कि कल्पांत तक तुम इस धरती पर जीवित रहोगे, इसीलिए अश्वत्थामा सात चिरन्जीवियों में गिने जाते हैं।
माना जाता है कि वे आज भी जीवित हैं तथा अपने कर्म के कारण भटक रहे हैं। हरियाणा के कुरुक्षेत्र एवं अन्य तीर्थों में यदा-कदा उनके दिखाई देने के दावे किए जाते रहे हैं। मध्यप्रदेश के बुरहानपुर के किले में उनके दिखाई दिए जाने की घटना भी प्रचलित है। 


7.कृपाचार्य : शरद्वान् गौतम के एक प्रसिद्ध पुत्र हुए हैं कृपाचार्य। कृपाचार्य अश्वथामा के मामा और कौरवों के कुलगुरु थे। शिकार खेलते हुए शांतनु को दो शिशु प्राप्त हुए। उन दोनों का नाम कृपी और कृप रखकर शांतनु ने उनका लालन-पालन किया। महाभारत युद्ध में कृपाचार्य कौरवों की ओर से सक्रिय थे।
