ब्रह्मा जी ने शिव जी की तपस्या शुरू की इससे शिवजी प्रकट हुए और मैथुनी सृष्टि की रचना का आदेश दिया। ब्रह्मा जी ने शिव जी से पूछा कि मैथुन सृष्टि कैसी होगी, कृपया यह भी बताएं। ब्रह्मा जी को मैथुनी सृष्टि का रहस्य समझाने के लिए शिव जी ने अपने शरीर के आधे भाग को नारी रूप में प्रकट कर दिया।
इसके बाद नर और नारी भाग अलग हो गये। ब्रह्मा जी नारी को प्रकट करने में असमर्थ थे इसलिए ब्रह्मा जी की प्रार्थना पर शिवा यानी शिव के नारी स्वरूप ने अपने रूप से एक अन्य नारी की रचना की और ब्रह्मा जी को सौंप दिया। इसके बाद अर्द्घनारीश्वर स्वरूप एक होकर पुनः पूर्ण शिव के रूप में प्रकट हो गया। इसके बाद मैथुनी सृष्टि से संसार का विकास तेजी से होने लगा। शिव के नारी स्वरूप ने कालांतर में हिमालय की पुत्री पार्वती रूप में जन्म लेकर शिव से मिलन किया।

संत ज्ञानेश्वर की गणना भारत के महान संतों एवं मराठी कवियों में होती है। इनके पिता का नाम विट्ठल पंत तथा माता का नाम रुक्मिणी बाई था। विवाह के कई वर्षों बाद भी कोई सन्तान न होने पर विट्ठल पंत ने संन्यास ग्रहण कर लिया और स्वामी रामानंद को अपना गुरु बना लिया। बाद में गुरु के आदेश पर ही इन्होंने फिर से गृहस्थ जीवन को अपनाया। इनके इस कार्य को समाज ने मान्यता प्रदान नहीं की और समाज से इनका बहिष्कार कर दिया और इनका बड़ा अपमान किया। ज्ञानेश्वर के माता-पिता इस अपमान के बोझ को सह न सके और उन्होंने त्रिवेणी में डूबकर प्राण त्याग कर दिए। संत ज्ञानेश्वर ने भी 21 वर्ष की आयु में ही संसार का त्यागकर समाधि ग्रहण कर ली। ज्ञानेश्वर के पितामह 'त्र्यंबक पंत' गोरखनाथ के शिष्य और परम भक्त थे। ज्ञानेश्वर के पिता विट्ठल पंत इन्हीं त्र्यंबक पंत के पुत्र थे। 
कुछ समय बाद स्वामी रामानंद दक्षिण भारत की यात्रा करते हुए आलंदी गाँव पहुँचे। वहाँ जब विट्ठल पंत की पत्नी ने उन्हें प्रणाम किया, तो स्वामी जी ने उसे पुत्रवती होने का आशीर्वाद दे दिया। इस पर विट्ठल पंत की पत्नी रूक्मिणी बाई ने कहा- मुझे आप पुत्रवती होने का आशीर्वाद दे रहे हैं, पर मेरे पति को तो आपने पहले ही संन्यासी बना लिया है। इस घटना के बाद स्वामी जी ने काशी आकर विट्ठल पंत को फिर गृहस्य जीवन अपनाने की आज्ञा दी। उसके बाद ही उनके तीन पुत्र और कन्या पैदा हुई। ज्ञानेश्वर इन्हीं में से एक थे। संत ज्ञानेश्वर के दोंनों भाई 'निवृत्तिनाथ' एवं 'सोपानदेव' भी संत स्वभाव के थे। इनकी बहिन का नाम 'मुक्ताबाई' था।                                                                                                                                              ज्ञानेश्वर के बड़े भाई निवृत्तिनाथ की गुरु गैगीनाथ से भेंट हो गई। वे विट्ठल पंत के गुरु रह चुके थे। उन्होंने निवृत्तिनाथ को योगमार्ग की दीक्षा और कृष्ण उपासना का उपदेश दिया। बाद में निवृत्तिनाथ ने ज्ञानेश्वर को भी दीक्षित किया। फिर ये लोग पंडितों से शुद्धिपत्र लेने के उद्देश्य से पैठण पहुँचे। वहाँ रहने के दिनों की ज्ञानेश्वर की कई चमत्कारिक कथाएँ प्रचलित हैं। कहते हैं, उन्होंने भैंस के सिर पर हाथ रखकर उसके मुँह से वेद मंत्रों का उच्चारण कराया। भैंस को जो डंडे मारे गए, उसके निशान ज्ञानेश्वर के शरीर पर उभर आए। यह सब देखकर पैठण के पंडितों ने ज्ञानेश्वर और उनके भाई को शुद्धिपत्र दे दिया। अब उनकी ख्याति अपने गाँव तक पहुँच चुकी थी। वहाँ भी उनका बड़े प्रेम से स्वागत हुआ।पंद्रह वर्ष की उम्र में ही ज्ञानेश्वर कृष्णभक्त और योगी बन चुके थे। बड़े भाई निवृत्तिनाथ के कहने पर उन्होंने एक वर्ष के अंदर ही भगवद्गीता पर टीका लिख डाली। ‘ज्ञानेश्वरी’ नाम का यह ग्रंथ मराठी भाषा का अद्वितीय ग्रंथ माना जाता है। यह ग्रंथ 10,000 पद्यों में लिखा गया है। यह भी अद्वैत-वादी रचना है, किंतु यह योग पर भी बल देती है।

मनोयोग से किसी कदर मन तो बलवान बनता है परन्तु आत्मा के ऊपर इस योग का कोई प्रभाव नहीं पड़ता I मनोयोगी की आत्मा हमेशा निर्बल ही रहती है I आत्मा के बलवान बनाने के लिए आत्म-योग करना लाजिमी है I मन स्वयं जड़ है, इसकी शक्तियां भी जड़ है, जब तक आत्मा इसे निज शक्ति नहीं देती तब तक यह कोई काम नहीं कर सकता I यह जब किसी काम को करने की इच्छा करता है तो आत्मा से शक्ति खींचता और उसके द्वारा अपनी मशीन को चालू करता है I विद्युत का भण्डार आत्मा है जब मन का कनेक्शन उधर जुड़ जाता है तभी विद्युत धारा उतर के मन की शक्तियों को चालु कर देती है I मन के अंदर इतनी शक्तियां है कि जिनकी शुमार नहीं की जाती है आत्मा विद्युत द्वारा जिस शक्ति को धक्का देती है वही हरकत में आ जाती है और अपना काम करने लगती है I निर्बल आत्मा का प्रवाह भी निर्बल रहता है, उसका धक्का भी हलका लगता है इससे मन की पूर्ण शक्तियां उसके द्वारा जाग्रत नहीं हो सकती, कुछ थोड़ी सी चालू हो जाती हैं इसलिये मनोयोगी निचले तबके (स्थूल लोक) के कुछ कार्य कर सकता है इससे परे सूक्ष्म भवनों में न तो उसकी पहुँच होती है और न वहाँ का ज्ञान उसे होता है I आत्म योगी सारे ब्रह्माण्ड में विचरता है I वहाँ का पूर्ण ज्ञान प्राप्त करता है, और आवश्यकता पड़ने पर वह उन सूक्ष्म और कारण के लोकों में भी मन की शक्तियों को भेज सकता है और उनसे इच्छानुसार काम ले सकता है I वह आत्मबल पाके संतुष्ट व शांत रहता है, जिन शक्तियों को मनोयोगी, बहुत कोशिश करने पर पाता है वह सब उसे सहज ही प्राप्त हो जाती है, और वह उससे भी कहीं अधिक शक्तिशाली बन जाता है I मनोयोगी प्राणमय और मनोमय लोकों तक की खबर रखता है, और वह भी अधूरी ही पूरी नहीं, आत्मयोगी विज्ञानमय और आनंदमय भवनोंओं की सैर करता हुआ वहाँ का यथार्थ ज्ञान प्राप्त कर शांत हो जाता है, जहां न भय है न शंका है, न किसी प्रकार की कमी है I आनंद है, केवल आनंद I इधर का भी मालिक और उधर का भी मालिक I इसलिये साधकों को उचित है कि आत्मयोग के द्वारा अपनी आत्मा को बलवान बनायें I माया की बेड़ियाँ काट के स्वयं मुक्त हों और दूसरे प्राणियों को मुक्ति का पथ दिखायें, इस बाहरी जगत् के मिथ्या झंझटों से अपने को बचा के कल्याण की ओर चलें और दूसरों को भी ले जायें, यही असली धर्म और मनुष्य कर्तव्य है I मानसिक योगी दूसरों के साथ क्षणिक उपकार कर सकता है, वह थोड़े काल के लिए किसी शरीरधारी का रोग हटा सकता है, उसके किसी दूसरे कष्ट का निवारण कर सकता है परन्तु इसमे दुःख से सदैव के लिए छुटकारा कहाँ मिला? अपने लिए व दूसरों के लिए ऐसा उद्योग करना चाहिए कि न दुःख रहे और न दुःख का कारण रहे, हमेशा को सुख और आनंद प्राप्त हो जाय, यही प्राणियों के साथ सच्चा उपकार है जो महापुरुषों द्वारा होता है I वह जीवों को मुक्ति दिलाने के उद्योग में लगते है उनको मुक्ति मार्ग दिखाते हैं, उस पर चलाते हैं जहां कहीं साधक में असमर्थता देखते है वहाँ अपनी आत्म-शक्ति का सहारा दे उसकी उस रुकावट को हटाते हैं I उसके मॉल-विक्षेप और आवरण को अपनी शक्ति के द्वारा दूर करते है इत्यादि I यह सब आत्मयोग के द्वारा हो सकता है, मनोयोगी इस कार्य को नहीं कर सकता I इसलिये यदि सेवा का भाव संकल्प किया है, दूसरों के साथ उपकार करने का इरादा किया है, तो ऐसा सच्चा करो, ऐसी रूहनी खिदमत करो I इसके लिए अपनी विभूतियों से काम लो, इसमे बुराई नहीं है I इसमे अपना भी कल्याण है और दूसरों का भी, परन्तु बीच में मत अटके रहो I सिद्धियों से काम लेने का निषेध संसारी कामों के लिए है, महापुरुषों की सिद्धियाँ लोक दिखावे को नहीं बल्कि परमार्थ के लिए होती है इसको बुरा नहीं समझते I

इस पर भीष्म जी बोले---“सारे धर्मों से उत्तम फल देने वाली माता पिता और गुरु की भक्ति है I मैं सब प्रकार की पूजाओं से इनकी सेवा को बड़ा मानता हूँ I इस व्रत का पालन करने वाला मनुष्य संसार में भी यश का भागी बनता है और पुण्य लोकों पर भी विजय प्राप्त करता है I माता-पिता और गुरु जिस बात की आज्ञा दे उसे बिना सोचे विचारे पालन कर डालना चाहिए I क्योंकि वह तुम्हारे अहित की बात कह ही नहीं सकते I जिस काम को उनकी आज्ञा हो वह धर्म ही है चाहे शास्त्र उसकी आज्ञा दे रहा हो या नहीं, ऐसा निश्चय रखना चाहिये I”

जहां तक बन सके इनकी आज्ञा का कभी उल्लंघन न करे I इनको भोजन कराके स्वयं भोजन करे I उनको कभी भी दोष से न देखे, सदा उनकी सेवा के लिए तैयार रहे जिसने इनका आदर कर लिया उसने मानों सारे संसार का आदर कर लिया और जिसके द्वारा इनका अनादर हुआ उसके सम्पूर्ण शुभ कर्मों पर पानी फिर गया I ऐसे सम्मान न करने वाले मनुष्य के इहलोक और परलोक दोनों बिगड़ जाते हैं I
“गुरु भी कई प्रकार के होते हैं---एक दीक्षा गुरु या कुल गुरु होता है जो उपनयन (जनेऊ) संस्कार कराके मंत्र दीक्षा देता है, दूसरा विद्यागुरु होता है जो शास्त्र पढ़ा के विद्वान बनाता है, इन दोनों से माता-पिता का दर्जा बहुत ऊंचा है I माता का महत्त्व पिता से भी बढ़ के माना गया है, उसके समान किसी का गौरव नहीं है, पुत्र के लिये वह सारे संसार से ऊंची है जो पुत्र उसका आशीर्वाद नहीं लेता वह चाहे जितना तप करे, चाहे जितना दान करे और चाहे सहस्त्रों अश्वमेघ यज्ञ कर डाले कभी उसका कल्याण नहीं होता I भगवान सदा उससे अप्रसन्न रहते हैं I”

लिखे। बारह दलों में क्रमशः निम्न मन्त्र लिखे- १॰ हनुमते नमः, २॰
अञ्जनी-सूनवे नमः, ३॰ वायु-पुत्राय नमः, ४॰ महा-बलाय नमः, ५॰
श्रीरामेष्टाय नमः, ६॰ फाल्गुन-सखाय नमः, ७॰ पिङ्गाक्षाय नमः, ८॰ अमित-
विक्रमाय नमः, ९॰ उदधि-क्रमणाय नमः, १०॰ सीता-शोक-विनाशकाय नमः, ११॰

का ११००० जप करें। ब्रह्मचर्य का पालन करते हुए लाल चन्दन
