महाभारत के शांतिपर्व में एक कथा है---राजर्षि भीष्म वाण शैया पर पड़े मृत्यु की बाट जोह रहे थे उस समय महाराजा युधिष्ठिर अपने भाइयों और भगवान कृष्ण के साथ उनके दर्शनों को पहुँचे I आज्ञा पाकर युधिष्ठिर ने पूछा– दादा, धर्म का मार्ग बड़ा ही विस्तीर्ण है और फिर उस पर भी उसमे अगणित शाखायें हैं, इनमे किसको आप श्रेष्ठ, सुगम और प्रधान मानते हैं उसी का मुझे उपदेश दें ताकि उस पर चलकर मेरे यह लोक और परलोक दोनों सुधर जायें I
इस पर भीष्म जी बोले---“सारे धर्मों से उत्तम फल देने वाली माता पिता और गुरु की भक्ति है I मैं सब प्रकार की पूजाओं से इनकी सेवा को बड़ा मानता हूँ I इस व्रत का पालन करने वाला मनुष्य संसार में भी यश का भागी बनता है और पुण्य लोकों पर भी विजय प्राप्त करता है I माता-पिता और गुरु जिस बात की आज्ञा दे उसे बिना सोचे विचारे पालन कर डालना चाहिए I क्योंकि वह तुम्हारे अहित की बात कह ही नहीं सकते I जिस काम को उनकी आज्ञा हो वह धर्म ही है चाहे शास्त्र उसकी आज्ञा दे रहा हो या नहीं, ऐसा निश्चय रखना चाहिये I”

परमारथ के कारने, चारौं धारे देह I I
“माता-पिता और गुरु---ये ही तीनों लोक हैं, ये ही तीनों आश्रम हैं, ये ही तीनों वेद हैं, ये ही यज्ञ की तीन अग्नियाँ हैं I जो इनकी सेवा में भूल नहीं करता वह तीनों लोकों को जीत लेता है I पिता की सेवा से इस लोक को, माता की सेवा से परलोक को और गुरु की सेवा से परब्रह्म लोक को मनुष्य प्राप्त होता है I ऐसा करने से यश, परम कल्याण और महान् फल देने वाले धर्म का पालन होता है I”
जहां तक बन सके इनकी आज्ञा का कभी उल्लंघन न करे I इनको भोजन कराके स्वयं भोजन करे I उनको कभी भी दोष से न देखे, सदा उनकी सेवा के लिए तैयार रहे जिसने इनका आदर कर लिया उसने मानों सारे संसार का आदर कर लिया और जिसके द्वारा इनका अनादर हुआ उसके सम्पूर्ण शुभ कर्मों पर पानी फिर गया I ऐसे सम्मान न करने वाले मनुष्य के इहलोक और परलोक दोनों बिगड़ जाते हैं I
“गुरु भी कई प्रकार के होते हैं---एक दीक्षा गुरु या कुल गुरु होता है जो उपनयन (जनेऊ) संस्कार कराके मंत्र दीक्षा देता है, दूसरा विद्यागुरु होता है जो शास्त्र पढ़ा के विद्वान बनाता है, इन दोनों से माता-पिता का दर्जा बहुत ऊंचा है I माता का महत्त्व पिता से भी बढ़ के माना गया है, उसके समान किसी का गौरव नहीं है, पुत्र के लिये वह सारे संसार से ऊंची है जो पुत्र उसका आशीर्वाद नहीं लेता वह चाहे जितना तप करे, चाहे जितना दान करे और चाहे सहस्त्रों अश्वमेघ यज्ञ कर डाले कभी उसका कल्याण नहीं होता I भगवान सदा उससे अप्रसन्न रहते हैं I”
“परन्तु युधिष्ठिर, मेरा विश्वास ऐसा है कि गुरु का दर्जा माता-पिता से भी बढ़कर है I माता-पिता तो इस भौतिक शरीर को जन्म देते हैं, बचपन में इसकी रक्षा करते हैं पर गुरु तो उस दिव्य आत्म तत्व का ज्ञान देते हैं कि जिससे जन्म-मरण से छुटकारा ही मिल जाता है, कोई दुःख, कोई विपदा वहाँ रहती ही नहीं I माता-पिता से यदि कोई अपराध भी हो जाय तो भी उनको दुतकारना नहीं चाहिए, उन्हें त्यागना नहीं चाहिये, सेवा और प्रतिष्ठा से मुँह नहीं मोड़ना चाहिए I”
“माता-पिता और गुरु का कभी अपमान न करे, उनकी निंदा न करे न सुने I मन या कर्म से माता-पिता और गुरु से द्रोह करने वाले महान् पापी नर्क भोगते हैं I उनका उद्धार कभी किसी काल में नहीं होता I कृतघ्न मनुष्य के लिये हमने कोई प्रायश्चित ही नहीं सुना I माता-पिता के द्वारा पालन-पोषण होकर बड़े हो जाने पर जो उनका पालन-पोषण नहीं करते, स्त्री के कहने से या किसी दूसरे कारण से उन्हें दुखी रखते हैं वह कभी फलते-फूलते नहीं और आगे उनकी सन्तान भी उन्हें ऐसा ही तंग करती है, इसलिये इन तीनों की सेवा ही सबसे बढ़िया धर्म है, इससे बढ़के और कोई साधन नहीं है I” यह भीष्म जी ने युधिष्ठिर को उपदेश किया
