सांसरिक जीवन में उतार चढ़ाव आते ही रहते हैं। हम जब पैदल मार्ग पर चलते हैं तब कहीं सड़क अत्यंत सपाट होती है तो कहीं गड्ढे होते हैं। कहीं घास आती है तो कहीं पत्थर पांव के लिये संकट पैदा करते हैं। हमारा जीवन भी इस तरह का है। अगर अपने प्राचीन ग्रंथों का हम निरंतर अभ्यास करते रहें तो मानसिक रूप से परिपक्वता आती है। इस संसार में सदैव कोई विषय अपने अनुकूल नहीं होता। इतना अवश्य है कि हम अगर अध्यात्मिक रूप से दृढ़ हैं तो उन विषयों के प्रतिकूल होने पर सहजता से अपने अनुकूल बना सकते हैं या फिर ऐसा होने तक हम अपने प्रयास जारी रख सकते हैं। दूसरी बात यह भी है कि प्रकृति के अनुसार हर काम के पूरे होने का एक निश्चित समय होता है। अज्ञानी मनुष्य उतावले रहते हैं और वह अपने काम को अपने अनुकूल समय पर पूरा करने के लिये तंत्र मंत्र तथा अनुष्ठानो के चक्कर पड़ जाते हैं। यही कारण है कि हमारे देश में धर्म के नाम पर अनेक प्रकार के पाखंडी सिद्ध बन गये हैं। ऐसे कथित सिद्धों की संगत मनुष्य को डरपोक तथा लालची बना देती है जो कथित दैवीय प्रकोप के भय से ग्रसित रहते हैं। इतना ही नहीं इन तांत्रिकों के चक्कर में आदमी इतना अज्ञानी हो जाता है कि वह तंत्र मंत्र तथा अनुष्ठान को अपना स्वाभाविक कर्म मानकर करता है। उसके अंदर धर्म और अधर्म की पहचान ही नहीं रहती।
कौटिल्य के अर्थशास्त्र में कहा गया है कि
.गंगाजल जब समुद्र में मिलता है तो वह पीने योग्य नहीं रह जाता। ज्ञानी को चाहिये कि वह अशुभ लक्षणों वाले लोगों का आश्रय न ले अन्यथा उसकी स्थिति भी समुद्र में मिले गंगाजल की तरह हो जायेगी।

हमारे देश में अनेक ज्ञानी अपनी दुकान लगाये बैठे हैं। यह ज्ञानी चुटकुलों और कहानियों के सहारे भीड़ जुटाकर कमाई करते हैं। इतना ही नहीं उस धन से न केवल अपने लिये राजमहलनुमा आश्रम बनाते हैं बल्कि दूसरों को अपने काम स्वयं करने की सलाह देने वाले ये गुरु अपने यहां सारे कामों के लिये कर्मचारी भी रखते हैं। एक तरह से वह धर्म के नाम पर कपंनियां चलाते हैं यह अलग बात है कि उन्हें धर्म की आड़ में अनेक प्रकार की कर रियायत मिलती है। मूल बात यह है कि हमें अध्यात्मिक ज्ञान के लिये स्वयं पर ही निर्भर होना चाहिये। दूसरी बात यह भी है कि ज्ञान होना ही पर्याप्त नहीं है बल्कि उसे धारण भी करना चाहिये। यही बुद्धिमानी की निशानी है। बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति तनाव का समय होने पर भी अपनी मर्यादा नहीं छोड़ता। यही कारण है कि बुरा समय निकल जाने के बाद वह प्रतिष्ठा प्राप्त करता है। लोग उसके पराक्रम, प्रयास तथा प्रतिबद्धता देखकर उसकी प्रशंसा करते हैं।
