एक राजा था, एक बार उसने भगवानकृष्ण जी का एक मंदिर बनवाया और पूजा के लिए एक
पुजारी जी को लगा दिया. पुजारी जी बड़े भाव से बिहारी जी की सेवा करने लगे,
भगवान का श्रंगार करते, भोग लगाते, उन्हें सुलाते, ऐस तरह सेवा करते-करते पुजारी जी बूंढे हो गए। राजा रोज एक फूलो की माला सेवक के हाथ से भेजा करता था।
पुजारी जी वह माला बिहारी जी को पहना देते थे। जब राजा दर्शन करने जाते थे तो पुजारी जी वह
माला बिहारी जी के गले से उतार कर राजा को पहना देते थे. ये हर दिन का नियम था.
एक दिन राजा किसी काम से मंदिर नहीं जा सके इसलिए उसने सेवक से कहा...
तुम ये माला लेकर मंदिर जाओ और पुजारी जी से कहना आज हमें कुछ काम है इसलिए हम नही आ सकते वे हमारा इंतजार न करे...
सेवक ने जाकर माला पुजारी जी को दे दी और सारी बात बता कर वापस आ गया .
पुजारी जी ने माला बिहारी जी को पहना दी फ़िर वे सोचने लगे की आज बिहारीजी की मुझ पर बड़ी कृपा है. राजा तो आज आये नहीं क्यों न ये माला में पहन लू ,इतना सोचकर पुजारी जी ने माला उतार करस्वंय पहन ली .इतने में सेवक ने बाहर से कहा- राजा आ रहे है.पुजारे जी ने सोचा अगर राजा ने माला मेरे गले मेंदेखली, तो मुझ पर बहुत नाराज होगे।हड़बडाहट में पुजारी जी ने अपने गले सेमाला उत्तार कर बिहारी जी को पहना दी।जैसे ही राजा आये तो माला उतार कर राजा को पहना दी.
राजा ने देखा माला में एक सफ़ेद बाल लगा है तो राजा समझ गए की पुजारी जी ने माला स्वंय पहन ली है। राजा को बहुत गुस्सा आया राजा ने पुजारी जी से पूँछा.....पुजारी जी ये सफ़ेद बाल किसका है ?पुजारी जी को लगा अगर में सच बोलूगा तो राजा सजा देगा इसलिये पुजारी जी ने कह...ये सफ़ेद बाल बिहारी जी का है. अब तो राजा को और भी गुस्सा आया कि ये पुजारी जी झूठ पर झूठ बोले जा रहा है. बिहारीजी के बाल भी कही सफ़ेद होते है.राजा ने कहा....
पुजारी जी अगर ये सफेद बाल बिहारी जी का है तो सुबह श्रंगार करते, समय में आँउगा और देखूँगा कि बिहारी जी के बाल सफ़ेद है या काले, अगर बिहारी जी के बाल काले निकले तो आपको फाँसी की सजा दी जायेगी इतना कह कर राजा चला गया . अब पुजारी जी रोने लगे और बिहारी जी से कहने
लगे हे प्रभु अब आप ही बचाइए नहीं तो राजा मुझे सुबह होते ही फाँसी पर चढा देगा पुजारी जी की सारी रात रोने में निकल गयी कब सुबह हो गयी उन्हें पता ही नहीं चला. सुबह होते ही राजा आ गया और बोला पुजारी जी में स्वंय देखूगा. इतना कहकर राजा ने जैसे ही मुकुट हटाया तो क्या देखता है बिहारी जी के सारे बाल सफ़ेद है. राजा को लगा, पुजारी जी ने ऐसा किया है अब तो उसे और भी गुस्सा आया और उसने परीक्षा करने के लिए कि बाल असली है या नकली, जैसे ही एक बाल तोडा तो बिहारी जी के सिर से खून कि धार बहने लगी और बिहारी जी केश्री विग्रह से आवाज आई कि..

मूर्ति ही हूँ और पुजारी जी की सच्ची भक्ति से भगवान बड़े प्रसन्न हुए.
कथा का सार यह है की :-मंदिर में बैठे भगवान केवल एक पत्थर की मूर्ति नहीं है, उन्हें इसी भाव से
देखो की वे साक्षात बिहारी जी है और वैसे ही उनकी सेवा करो.
