ईश्वर ने अपनी सृष्टि में सौरमंडल के जीवंत ग्रह धरती पर लाखों प्रकार के प्राणियों की रचना की ।इनमें मनुष्य नामक सर्वश्रेष्ठ प्राणी भी है ।मनु से मानव हुआ , अर्थात मनु का वंशज ।इस प्रकार मनुष्य या मानव या आदमी की एक ही जाति हुई ।इस मनुष्य जाति के दो विभाग हैं स्त्री और पुरुष ।भारतीय संस्कृति और दर्शन के अनुसार स्त्री और पुरुष दोनों मिलकर ही पूर्णता प्राप्त करते हैं ।हमारे पूर्वज ऋषियों ने मानवमात्र का एकमात्र लक्ष्य परमात्मा यानि ईश्वर की प्राप्ति बताया ।इस क्रम में ईश्वर की प्राप्ति तथा सांसारिक सृष्टि चक्र के संतुलन के लिये एक पद्धति विकसित हुआ जिसे वर्णाश्रम कहा गया ।वर्ण का अर्थ रंग भी होता है ! सभी मनुष्य शारीरिक संरचना में समान ही रहते हैं , चमडे के रंग से यहाँ कोई मतलब नहीं है ।आध्यात्मिक अर्थ में वर्ण का शुद्ध अर्थ मूल स्वरूप होता है ।मूल स्वरूप से तात्पर्य जिससे उत्पन्न हुआ है ।शरीर युगल शरीर से और आत्मा परमात्मा से उत्पन्न होता है ।आत्मा का शुद्ध वर्ण है परमात्मा ।शरीर एवं मन की विशेष प्रक्रिया जिससे आत्मा परमात्मा से मिलती है ।वर्णाश्रम सिद्धांत का मूल यही है ।मनुष्य जीवन का सबसे उत्तम कर्म यही है ।
गीता में भी श्री कृष्ण कहते हैं कि चारों वर्णो की रचना मैंने किया है ! कैसे तो कहे -गुण कर्म के विभाग पर आधारित करके ।
आत्मा के परमात्मा में मिलने की विशेष प्रक्रिया ही कर्म, योग साधना आदि कहा गया ।अव्यक्त स्थिति वाले ऋषियों , महापुरुषों ने इसी साधना क्रम को चार भागों में बाँटा ।
गीता में इसी को चार वर्ण कहा गया ।योगदर्शन में महर्षि पतञ्जलि इसी को अति उत्तम, उत्तम, मध्यम और निकृष्ट चार श्रेणियों में व्यक्त किया ।मानस के अरण्यकाण्ड में तुलसीदास जी ने माताओं के माध्यम से इसी को इंगित किया -उत्तम के अस बस मन माही आदि ।
शरीर और इन्द्रियो की गतिविधि सभी जीवों में समान रहती है ।मनुष्य को सर्वश्रेष्ठ केवल इसी कर्म करने में समर्थ होने के कारण कहा गया ।
युग कहते हैं दो को ।हानि -लाभ , जीवन मृत्यु , यश अपयश प्रकृति के ही दो पहलु हैं ।जब यह जानकारी होती है कि हम ईश्वर से अलग हैं और ईश्वर में मिलना है ।इसी मिलने की प्रक्रिया में जब साधक अलग और साध्य परमात्मा अलग आमने सामने रहता है तब उसके लिये युग की शुरुआत होती है ।
